After turning 18, psychedelic rock pioneer (and Austin, Texas native) Roky Erickson dropped out of high school and formed the band The Spades, pictured above. While they weren’t meant to last more than a few 45s, their songs “We Sell Soul” and “You’re Gonna Miss Me” remain howling anthems of teenage alienation and defiance.
Ultimately “You’re Gonna Miss Me” would become a ubiquitous garage rock nugget after Erickson’s band The 13th Floor Elevators released their version of the song a year later in 1966. The original version omits the Elevators’ famed “electric jug” sound focusing on the song’s youthful defiance over heady psychedelics.
Teenage is now playing in Austin, Texas at the Regal Cinema 8 this Friday March 25th. Get your tickets now.
