Charles Laufer was working as a high school teacher when he noticed that teenage girls didn’t have anything entertaining to read. In 1965 he responded with the first issue of Tiger Beat—filled to the brim with cute celebrities, hyper colored glossy pix, and endless exclamation marks. Tiger Beat was priced at 75 cents, the same amount as a hot-fudge sundae. Laufer died on April 5th in Northridge, Calif. at the age of 87. via NYTimes
