During the Great Depression, “Boxcar Children” and “Roving Boys” traveled across America via the tops of boxcars and freight trains. It was lawless…a self-reliant way of life and a way for a generation of American teens to escape.
The boxcar ethos is embodied in Mike Brodie‘s incredible photographs of contemporary teenagers riding the rails. Transient youth still criss-cross the country on the backs of freight trains, and Brodie’s photographs are poetic proof.
