Henry Parland: Nordic Rimbaud

My lies:
large, red balloons
that I buy on the street
and release into the heavens.
Once I bought a balloon
larger and redder than the rest.
It pulled me along.
Henry Parland (1908-1930) is regarded as a poetry prodigy in Sweden, even though he never even stepped foot on their soil. Born in Russia, Parland was exposed to the Russian language at school and German at home with his family. As the 1917 revolution intensified, he fled with his family to Finland, which had recently gained independence from Russia. Parland began attending a Finnish-language high school in the suburbs of Helsinki, but he got bullied so badly that he transferred to a Swedish international school.

In the past few years I’ve happened to be in Scandinavia with a certain frequency, and each time I went there—be it Denmark, Norway or Sweden—i’ve always been impressed by the freshness of Scandi youth. Not only are they all quite beautiful; even the most average kid seems to be style conscious, in a simple yet very fashionable and rad way. Or, we could now say, in a very Scandinavian way.
Different Notes

Andra Takter/Different Notes (1985) is a short documentary by Swedish filmmaker Benny Frick. There are no subtitles so I can’t say for sure what’s happening. The film follows two young people, Marie-Louise Waldestam and Sixten Andersson, showing parts of their lives both public and private. It was filmed during the time that Andersson played bass in the Göteborg hardcore band Anti-Cimex and became a minor internet sensation among fans when it was recently added to the Swedish film archive. The film features music by Anti-Cimex and Gbg Punx along with live performances by Subhumans and Peter & the Test Tube Babies.
