This may be the only pageant where contestants are required to know how to butcher a sheep—Miss Navajo. The first pageant was in 1952 and has now become a honored tradition, highlighting the knowledge, beauty and talents of young Navajo women.

Early motion pictures made by inventor extraordinaire Thomas Edison. See an acrobatic ‘street urchin’ bust some moves. Possibly the earliest recordings of break dancing? Edison also made some ridiculous ‘comedies’—a gaggle of seminary girls having a pillow fight, until the nasty headmistress storms in to silence up the fun. This is 1898 ya’ll.

Punky and Nose Candy

I idolized my cousin Merrie when I was a kid. The first time I ever took a plane by myself was to visit her in LA.  She lived in Studio City, and she took me out for Sushi. At the time she was working on Full House, so I had the opportunity to be an ice skating extra. I used my wages to buy my first pet rat, Willie. But I digress.

Before Full House, Merrie worked on the iconic children’s program Punky Brewster. I remember going to visit her at the studio with my parents and getting an opportunity to shake Brandon the dog’s hand backstage. He was well trained. I might have even had a brush with a pre-breast reduction Soleil Moon Frye.

Everyone likes pals who dress alike—including, coincidentally, this contributor from another great blog Rookie about teenagers.

In the New York Public Library’s Picture Collection folders there are many, many noteworthy examples of individual style, but what stood out to me were those who made originality a team sport.
